Treating Hemorrhoids with the Rubber Band Ligation
The rubber band ligation is the common office procedure for hemorrhoids; it is most often performed on patients with Grade I through III hemorrhoids. When compared to other popular hemorrhoid office procedures, the rubber band ligation compares very favorably, for example, the reoccurrence rate for the rubber band ligation is less than that experienced patients who have sclerotherpy or infrared coagulation performed. Unfortunately, hemorrhoids are a condition that is prone to recurrence, even after treatment or removal the hemorrhoids may still come back. In the short term, 65% – 85% of patients report excellent hemorrhoid relief after undergoing rubber band ligation, but even with rubber band ligation, a procedure that is considered one of the best, the recurrence rate after 5 years is 68%.
The rubber band ligation is a very safe procedure with minimal side effects, but like all medical treatments it does have some risk such as bleeding, sepsis, pain and blood clots, some of these blood clots can result in intense extreme pain. In extremely rare cases, sepsis can be life threatening. What’s great about the rubber band ligation is that when it is performed above the dentate line, it is virtually painless. This is because the dentate line separates the upper 2/3rds of the anal canal where there are no pain sensors from the lower 1/3rd of the anal canal where there are no pain sensors. This procedure involves shooting small rubber bands out of a drum like device; the rubber bands surround the hemroid cutting off the blood supply to it, eventually allowing it to dry up. After the hemorrhoid dries up in 7-10 days, it just naturally sloughs off. For people with a lot of hemorrhoids, it may be necessary to undergo multiple banding because banding too many hemorrhoids at a time can actually cause discomfort.
So, if you’re looking for an office procedure with a minimum of side effects and excellent results than rubber band ligation may give you the hemorrhoid relief you are looking for.
