Air Abrasion and Cosmetic Dentistry
A large percentage of the population has a fear of dental clinics in general, and dentists are having a challenging time trying to overcome the patient’s phobia using advanced and painless methods in cosmetic dentistry treatments to restore a patient’s healthy teeth.
Gone are the days when patients have to shut their eyes in fear as a dentist lowers a dental drill to clean or remove tooth decay. Now, dentists use air abrasion, a modern instrument that blasts away the decayed portion of the teeth using compressed air or gas and suctions the particles away.
Air abrasion is safe and painless. A dentist will use a rubber dam or protective resin to protect your other teeth that are not being treated. This modern cosmetic dentistry method has many advantages compared to the traditional method of drilling. Air abrasion method has no heat and pressure and does not produce vibration. Lesser amount of anesthesia is also needed for the procedure and the area being treated is left relatively dry, unlike the traditional drilling method. This is an advantage especially when the dentist places composite fillings on the area.
With air abrasion, you can save several trips to the dentist because the procedure is quick and simple, and multiple teeth or cavities can be cleaned in one visit. This method of modern dentistry treatment may cause sensitivity to your teeth and not recommended for cavities that go deeply nearer to the pulp of your teeth.
Air abrasion is ideal for children and adults who have minimal tooth decay but are afraid of visiting the dentist. This dentistry method is also suitable for other treatments such as removing old composite restorations, removing stains or discolorations in your tooth, or in preparing a tooth’s surface for sealants or bonding. Not all dentists have air abrasion equipment, so look for a dentist like my Stockton Dentist with one if you prefer a drill-less treatment.
